Y'all, let's take a minute to talk about property taxes. I know it's not the most exciting topic, but it's something that affects all of us - especially those of us living in Illinois.
First stop, Chronicle magazine
According to an article in Chronicle magazine by writer Laura Otto, Illinois towns are feeling the pressure when it comes to property taxes. With state funds being cut and pensions taking precedent, local governments are struggling to find ways to raise revenue. That has resulted in higher property tax bills for many Illinoisans.
Now I don't know about y'all, but I don't have money to burn. So when I see my property tax bill increasing year after year, it really hits me in the wallet.
Next up, Robert Feder
Over at Robert Feder's blog, he talks about how Illinois property tax hikes are affecting not just homeowners, but also renters. That's right, even if you're renting, you're not immune to property tax increases. Landlords have to pay those taxes too, and they often pass those costs along to their tenants.
So why are property taxes going up? It's not that local governments want to make us all broke (although it can certainly feel that way). It's just that they need money to operate. When state funds are cut, they have to find ways to make up the difference. And unfortunately, that usually means turning to property taxes.
But there are some things we can do to try to combat these hikes. We can attend town hall meetings and voice our concerns. We can vote for candidates who prioritize funding for local governments. And we can always try to appeal our property tax assessments if we feel they're unfair.
At the end of the day, nobody wants to pay more in property taxes. But if we want our towns to continue operating, we have to find a way to make it work.
